Description
A tale of a shipwreck, adventure and survival on a magic island, inspired by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, but also a tale of imprisonment and freedom, betrayal and forgiveness and for some, the opportunity to make a new start. The San Vittore Globe Tempest was written for children from eight upwards, for their parents and grandparents. This bilingual edition contains paper dolls of Prospero, Miranda, Caliban and Ariel for young readers to cut out and colour. Proceeds from the book will go to the cultural association CETEC Inside/Outside San Vittore Prison. It can be purchased through the Ledizione website or directly from the CETEC travelling players. The company, together with their ApeShakespeare Cart, an initiative, supporting the women inmate-chefs at the San Vittore prison, will be touring schools in Milan and its hinterland and planning events and parties. They intend bringing Shakespeare’s Tempest, culture and delicious food to young people of all ages. This Tempest will be on the road!
Written by Maggie Rose, translated by Roberta Verde, illustrated by Susan Marshall, this theatrical storytelling has a preface by Peter and Irina Brook. It is part of Edge Festival 2015/2016, in collaboration with “Exposhakespeare and Food for the City”, a project of the Department of Languages and Literatures at Milan State University.
“Pressure is our lives today creates a society without freedom.
In the harsh conditions of a prison, there’s an opportunity not to be missed. Here we can find the time and space for art and culture that can stir and nourish our spirit. But above all, a deep understading of contradictions, of humanity and of the work by William Shakespeare that stretches beyond all barriers”.
Peter Brook
